Bose Virtually Invisible® 191 Speakers
Bose is an interesting company, formed in 1964 in the United States by Amar Bose, a graduate of MIT, with the mission “Better Sound Through Research”. The first thing that springs to my mind when I think about Bose is “unconventional” their philosophy regarding speaker design seems to be more based on psycho-acoustics. Most speaker producers start with a conventional speaker design and enhance from there, Bose start with the idea of how they want the speaker to sound and research ways to make that happen. This design philosophy has resulted in some unique designs and helped define Bose as a leading brand in home audio. Though Bose has not limited themselves to just home audio, they have a growing range of professional audio products such as the Bose L1 but also car suspension systems. This I think is one of their more interesting projects and is definitely worth checking out the videos on how this technology preforms.
The Virtually Invisible® 191 speakers are designed to be installed in wall, they come with an interchangeable pair of either round or square flush mounting grills allowing you to pick which best suits your décor. Each speaker unit contains 2 2.5″ full range drivers. The speakers are positioned in what Bose call an Articulated Array® the idea being that your get an even coverage of sound and similar levels throughout the room – this is very much in line with Bose’s audio design philosophy. Also the Proprietary ported enclosure technology help give these speakers a decent low frequency response.
I will add this caution though; if you are going to install speakers throughout your house if you start with Bose you need to keep using Bose throughout, especially if you planning on having music play through different rooms. The reason I say this is Bose speakers sound like…Bose speakers, I’m not saying they sound bad because they can sound amazing, it’s just that they don’t sound like other brands. Of course there is a differnce between a set of say, $300 JBLs and some $50 Pyes, there is going to be some clarity and definition in the JBLs that is not there in they lower priced brands but it is unlikely you would walk from one room to the next and think “oooh that sounds REALLY different…” You may hear a difference but the difference of going from a room with Bose speakers into a room with JBLs could be a weird experience. But hey, it may not even bother you.
So if you are planning on purchasing some in wall speakers Bose Virtually Invisible® 191 Speakers may just be the speakers for you.
